7. Himalayan Greyheaded Fishing Eagle: (Ichthyophaga nana) 64 cms; upto 2400 mts. Sexes alike. Grey head and a white belly and vent with a short grey-black tail is diagnostic in flight. Affects clear, rapid forest streams, capturing fish near surface by pouncing from a perch or swooping from the air. Occasionally also feeds on small birds and animals.

8. King Vulture: (Sarcogyps calvus) Hindi name: Raj Gidh; 84 cms; upto 2000 mts. Sexes alike. Easily identified from naked scarlet head, neck, thighs and legs. Usually one or two birds at large vulture gatherings, feeding at animal carcasses or soaring over valleys. Rather timid compared to other vultures and waits on side of carcass for morsels.

9. Himalayan Griffon Vulture: (Gyps himalayensis) Hindi name: Bada Gidh; 122cms. Normally 600 to 2500 mts. but soars to over 4500 mts. occasionally in search of food. Sexes alike. One of the largest birds in the Himalayas, this sandy-white vulture is purely a mountain bird, sailing majestically over mountains and valleys, searching for dead animals where they gather in numbers to feed.

10. Lammergeier: (Gypaetus barbatus) Hindi name: Argul; 122 cms; normally 1200 to 4200 mts. Sexes alike. Rather eagle-like with cream coloured, feathered head and neck. A black "beard" is conspicuous in profile at chin. Often sails to immense heights of over 7000 mts. Known for its habit of carrying large bones and dropping them on rocks from a great height before descending to feed on marrow and splinters.
